A lot has been said about coaching and said very well. As we set out to describe coaching and how it can help, we decided to let people and organizations with extraordinary success answer our questions about coaching. And we decided to let the words and numbers talk for themselves.
What is Coaching?
“Coaching is unlocking people’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn and grow, rather than teaching them” ~ John Whitmore
“A coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you have always known you could be.” ~ Tom Landry
Who needs a Coach?
“Who exactly seeks out a coach… Winners who want more out of life” ~ Chicago Tribune
“Each person holds so much power within themselves that needs to be let out. Sometimes they just need a little nudge, a little direction, a little support, a little coaching, and the greatest things can happen” ~ Pete Carroll
“Everyone needs a coach” ~ Bill Gates
Why should I hire a coach?
When Eric Schmidt, Chairman & CEO of Google was asked what was the best advice he ever received, this is what he said –
“The advice that sticks out I got from John Doerr, who in 2001 said, “My advice to you is to have a coach.” I initially resented the advice, because after all, I was a CEO. I was pretty experienced. Why would I need a coach? Am I doing something wrong?
My argument was, How could a coach advise me if I’m the best person in the world at this?
But that’s not what a coach does. The coach doesn’t have to play the sport as well as you do. They have to watch you and get you to be your best. In the business context a coach is not a repetitious coach. A coach is somebody who looks at something with another set of eyes, describes it to you in [his] words, and discusses how to approach the problem.”
And here are the words of another leader on coaching.
“I never cease to be amazed at the power of the coaching process to draw out the skills or talent that was previously hidden within an individual, and which invariably finds a way to solve a problem previously thought unsolvable.”
John Russell, Managing Director, Harley-Davidson Europe Ltd.
Why should an organization hire a coach?
“I absolutely believe that people, unless coached, never reach their maximum capabilities.” ~ Bob Nardelli, former CEO, Home Depot
“I’ll bet most of the companies that are in life-or-death battles got into that kind of trouble because they didn’t pay enough attention to developing their leaders.” ~ Wayne Calloway, former Chairman, Pepsico, Inc.
Let’s talk about RoI. What do the numbers say?
“In one study, executive coaching at Booz Allen Hamilton returned $7.90 for every $1 the firm spent on coaching.” ~ MetrixGlobal LLC
“In a recent study, training alone improved leadership skills by 22%. When combined with Executive Coaching, improvement jumps to 77%.” ~ Fortune
“Even modest improvements can justify hiring a coach. An investment of $30,000 or so in an executive who has responsibility for tens of millions of dollars is a rounding error.” ~ Jerome Abarbanel, VP of Executive Resources, Citibank
